Bruce Jenner wasn’t always a decathlete. He began his athletic career in high school, where he earned a football scholarship to Graceland University. But a twist of fate, or rather a twist of the knee, ended his NFL aspirations, and he turned to the track instead.
Encouraged by Graceland coach L.D. Weldon, Bruce began training for the decathlon. He debuted as a decathlete at the Drake Relays in 1970 and made it to the Olympics in Munich two short years later.
Though he didn’t win any medals, he continued to train and returned to compete again in the 1976 Summer Games. This time, he brought home the gold and scored a record-setting 8,634 points. Bruce’s spontaneous celebratory lap around the track with an American flag draped over his shoulders has been emulated by athletes around the world.
Now a husband and father, Bruce is one of many Baby Boomers responsible for caring for loved ones on both ends of the generational spectrum: children and parents. Additionally, he suffers from osteoarthritis in his knee and his wife has chronic asthma. Bruce works with Medco’s specialist pharmacists to help manage his and his family’s prescription medications, and he makes sure he plays an active role in monitoring everyone’s progress.
